External Scholarships

There are numerous external scholarships that grade 12 students can apply to.  Students and parents are advised to do their own research. We will use this site to promote certain scholarships that our students have won in the past.  This is not an exhaustive list.  There are many more out there. Students must do their research.

1.  The 2016 Re/Max Quest for Excellence program is open for submissions from September 14, 2015 until midnight March 14, 2016. Only online entries will be accepted.  Go to the Re/Max Quest for Excellence Scholarship link for details.

2.  Horatio Alger Scholarship     DEADLINE:  OCTOBER 25  For criteria and to download the application see www.horatioalger.ca/en/scholarships

2. The Confratellanza Italo-Canadese is again offering two $1,500 scholarships to assist eligible students in their post secondary studies.  Students must be of Italian Heritage.  For further information and to download an application go to Confratellanza Italo-Canadese Application.  Deadline TBA for 2016

3. Each year BC School Sports is pleased to offer the Subway® scholarship. There will be four scholarships of $500 each that will be awarded to two male and two female student-athlete enrolled in member schools. For more information visit the web site Subway website.

4. APEG Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC has a $2500 scholarship intended for students heading into engineering or geoscience programs at UBC, UNBC, BCIT, UVIC or SFU. The deadline is June 26th, 2016.  Go to apeg.bc.ca/scholarships for an application and more info. 

5.  Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities.

To be considered, applicants must meet be:

  • In good academic standing.
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Students who have already completed secondary (high) school OR are graduating from secondary (high) school in the coming year OR those completing their first year of CÉGEP
  • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
  • Planning to or already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.

6.  Dogwood District/Authority Scholarships

There are 5500 District/Authority Scholarships distributed across school districts and independent school authorities that recognize graduating B.C. students for excellence in their chosen area of interest or strength. Beginning in the 2015/16 school year, winners will receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition.

These award acknowledge academics but also recognize a student's accomplishments in a number of fields:

  • Indigenous Languages and Culture, demonstrated at school or in the community
  • Fine Arts (e.g., Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music)
  • Applied Skills (e.g., Business Ed, Technology Ed, Home Economics)
  • Physical Activity (e.g., Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, not limited to Physical Education)
  • International Languages with Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) or External Assessments, including A.P. and I.B. courses
  • Community Service (Volunteer Activity), which includes demonstration of local and global issues and cultural awareness
  • Technical and Trades Training (e.g., Carpentry, Automotive, Mechanics, Cook Training)

Students can apply for this scholarship through their school counsellor.  As Independent school students, STMC students will be asked to give a presentation about themselves in front of a group of adjudicators at an evening event hosted by St. George's.  The deadline is Wednesday, April 6th.

7.  Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship

The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship (PTES) is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Each recipient will receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to use towards tuition in their teaching program at a designated BC post-secondary institution.

A student cannot win both a Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship and a BC Excellence Scholarship.

8.  South Burnaby Metro Bursary

If an STMC student has participated in the South Burnaby Metro Athletic Program, they might qualify for a bursary.    The deadline is March 31st.  For more information and to access an application go to South Burnaby Metro Bursary 

9.  Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame     Students must be Burnaby residents and must have made significant accomplishments in athletics,  For information and an application go to Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Application   The deadline is April 15, 2016

STMC Scholarships, Student Application Required

Anne Metzak Bursaries
The Parents’ Association awards two $750.00 bursaries. Students must apply for this award and direct their applications to the Parent’s Association through the Academic Counselling Office. The criteria are financial need, good grades, contribution to the school and the community. The winner will be determined by the Parents’ Association in consultation with the Administration.

Friends of Paul Iannone Scholarship
A $500.00 award is given to the student who combines strong achievement in Athletics and Music. The winner will be determined by the Friends of Paul in consultation with the Administration.

Mark Baldonero Award
One award of $2000.00 is given to a top science student who is also involved with outside activities. See the Academic Counselling Office for details. Preference is given to students heading toward a degree in Engineering or science. The winner will be determined by the Baldonero family in consultation with the Administration.

The Knights Of Old Alumni Scholarship
The Knights of Old Saint Thomas More Collegiate Alumni Association will award up to $1,000.00 in scholarships to a maximum of five students each calendar year, who best demonstrate the Alumni Association’s spirit and values. The award winners will be determined by the Alumni Association.

STMC Stan Jean Engineering Scholarships
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, there are two (2) $2500.00 scholarships available for graduating STMC students who are pursuing a degree in engineering. The winner must be strong academically with a high level of community involvement. The winner will be determined by the administration in consultation with the STMC Faculty.

STMC Stan Jean Community Involvement Scholarship
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, there are up to 4 X $1,000 scholarships available for a graduating STMC student who is heavily involved in the STMC community and has a strong academic record. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need. The winner will be determined by the administration in consultation with the STMC Faculty.  (This scholarship can be shared by more than one person but the amount awarded cannot exceed a total value of $4000.00.)

STMC Stan Jean Music Scholarship
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, there is one (1) $1000.00 scholarship available for a graduating STMC student who is enrolled in a music program at the post-secondary level. In addition to a music background the winner must have an outstanding academic record coupled with strong community involvement. The winner will be determined by the administration in consultation with the STMC Faculty.  (This scholarship can be shared by more than one student but the total cannot exceed a total of $1000.00)

Josemaria Palma Manrique Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship has been made available through the Manrique family. A $1200.00 scholarship will go to a student who loves music, sports and engineering. The student should also be involved in his faith and community service.

Nancy Yeadon Scholarships for college bound students
A generous donor has offered two (2) $500 scholarships (one for a male and one for a female) for students heading to a college or technical school. The criteria are financial need, good grades and contributions to the school and the community.

The Bro Charles Slattery Social Entrepreneurship Award
This $2500.00 award goes to a graduating STMC student (male or female) with demonstrated financial need, who intends to major in business at any college or university, with an expressed interest in “social entrepreneurship.” Social entrepreneurship refers to business ventures that are focused equally on solving social problems while generating profit or financial sustainability. This award aims to inspire students to become social entrepreneurs, and commemorates Brother Charles Slattery’s deep commitment to helping those around him, and his characteristic   “nothing is impossible” attitude.

The Rich Goulet “Unsung Hero” Award
This $2500.00 award will be given to a graduating student (male or female) who can demonstrate financial need, who may not have the highest grades or be a star athlete, but who makes a consistent contribution to any teams or clubs in which he or she is involved. An “unsung hero” who may not be the first in line to win other scholarships, but is deserving of support and recognition.  All candidates will be evaluated on their grades (transcript will be accessed by the Academic Counselling Office) and on the successful completion of this application.

STMC Scholarships Awarded Directly by Administration, No Application Required

Br. Carrothers Art Scholarship
This is a $500.00 award that is given to the best art student by the Art Department. This student must be going to a fine arts program at a post-secondary institution.

Art Prize
$200.00 the best art student other than the scholarship winner awarded by the Art Department.

John Favro Drama Award
A $500.00 award is given to a graduating student who made the greatest contribution to STMC’s Drama program.

Sally Gribble Memorial Scholarship
All grade 12 students will write an essay as part of their English 12 curriculum.  The student with the best essay will be awarded $500.00.

James Wade Bourget/Knight of the Year Award
The Knight of the Year is granted $1000.00.

Larry Johnston Award for Citizenship
This award presented at the Night of Knights is given a $750.00 scholarship from Artona

Brad Hardham Scholarship
A $500.00 award is given to the graduating student who best exemplifies a love of life, is popular with the other students, and is not receiving another award. This scholarship is awarded by the school administration in consultation with Grade 12 teachers.

Archbishop James Carney Award
Two Catholic students are selected by the Grade 12 Religion teachers and Religion department head. Each award is for $1000.00.

John Kozak Award
$1000.00. This award is sponsored by the John Kozak family and the foundation created at the school. This is awarded to the graduating student that best exemplifies John’s outlook on life: lives life to the fullest, shows strength and encouragement, treats others with courtesy and respect, inspires us to all be better people, displays true school spirit and inspires others to do so as well. This award is selected by the students.

The Terry Grant McLean Memorial Scholarship
This $750.00 award named in the memory of Terry Grant McLean, an alumnus, is awarded to a grade 12 student who, in the opinion of the faculty, best combines participation in school activities with concern for his or her classmates, sportsmanship and a solid academic record.

The Ferdie Carrion Memorial Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded to a student who best combines the qualities of athleticism with a good sense of humour and pleasant disposition. He or she should possess a true zest for life.

The Brother Charles Slattery Memorial Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is named in honor of a former principal of STMC. It will be awarded to a student who "has been a powerful positive influence on the lives of their fellow students by affirming others' value, supporting their peers in their endeavours, inspiring those who are struggling, contributing positive energy with their sense of humour, and displaying the "nothing is impossible" attitude with which Bro. Slattery approached challenges. Someone who is the "heart" or "energy" of their team or class."

The CISVA Athletics Scholarship
The Catholic Independent Schools is pleased to offer a $250.00 scholarship to a graduating student who excels at Athletics at STMC.  The winning student can be involved in extra-curricular teams or in the PE Department.  The winner will be chosen by the administration in consultation with the faculty.

The CISVA Fine Arts Scholarship
The Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) is pleased to offer a $250.00 scholarship to a graduating student who excels in Fine Arts.

Other Academic Scholarships
The Parents Association and the Staff of STMC recognize the top academic students each year.  The top 5 ranked seniors receive scholarships ranging from $1200.00 down to $300.00.
