STMC Scholarships 2017

STMC offers a number of scholarships. Some require an application; others are awarded directly by the administration. All scholarships are listed below with links to the applications where needed.

The applications below are all fillable pdf forms (to access fillable version, right-click on file and "save link/target as" to your desktop). Once you have filled them out, please send them by email to awards@stmc.bc.ca before the deadline of May 19, 2017.

Anne Metzak Memorial Award
Two awards of $750.00 each are offered by the STMC Parents’ Association, in memory of Anne Metzak, to assist graduating students with their post-secondary education. Applicants must have a good academic record, made a contribution to the school and the community, and must demonstrate financial need.

Josemaria Palma Manrique Memorial Scholarship
A $1,200.00 scholarship has been made available by family and friends, in memory of Jomar Manrique (‘04). The award will go to a graduating student who loves music, fosters camaraderie and friendship among peers, has been involved in community service at STMC and is actively involved their church/parish community.

Mark Baldonero Memorial Scholarship
A $2,000.00 scholarship has been made available by family and friends, in memory of Mark Baldonero (’91). The scholarship is given to a top science student who is also involved with activities outside of STMC. Preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in engineering or science.

Nancy Yeadon Scholarships for Community Involvement (college or technical school bound)
Two scholarships of $500.00 each have been made available by a generous donor to graduating students (preferably one male and one female) heading to a local college or a technical institution. Applicants must have a good academic record, have made a contribution to the school and the community, and must demonstrate financial need.

Nancy Yeadon Scholarships for Community Involvement (university bound)
Two scholarships of $500.00 each have been made available by a generous donor to graduating students (preferably one male and one female) heading to a university. Applicants must have a good academic record, have made a contribution to the school and the community, and must demonstrate financial need.

StanJean Community Involvement Scholarships
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, two scholarships of $1,000 each have been made available to graduating students who are heavily involved in the STMC community and have a strong academic record. StanJean Engineering Scholarship
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, a $2,000.00 scholarship has been made available to a graduating student who is pursuing a degree in engineering. The winner must have a strong academic record with a high level of community involvement.

StanJean High Achievement Scholarships
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, four scholarships of $1,000.00 each, have been made available to graduating students who can demonstrate an all-around commitment to high achievement in the areas of faith, academics, athletics, arts, and sciences.

StanJean Music/Arts Scholarship
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, a $2,000.00 scholarship has been made available to a graduating student who is enrolled in a music or arts program at the post-secondary level. In addition to a music/arts background the winner must have an outstanding academic record and a high level of community involvement.

The Brother Charles Slattery Young Social Entrepreneurship Award
A $2,500.00 award has been made available by a generous anonymous donor to a graduating student (male or female) with demonstrated financial need, who intends to major in business at any college or university, with an expressed interest in “social entrepreneurship.” Social entrepreneurship refers to business ventures that are focused equally on solving social problems while generating profit or financial sustainability. This award aims to inspire students to become social entrepreneurs, and commemorates Brother Charles Slattery’s deep commitment to helping those around him, and his characteristic “nothing is impossible” attitude.

The Friends of Paul Iannone Award
A $500.00 award has been made available by the friends of Paul Iannone (’75), to a graduating student who has achieved a high level of success in both Athletics and Music.

The Knights Of Old Alumni Scholarship
The Knights of Old St. Thomas More Collegiate Alumni Association will award up to $2,000.00 in scholarships to a maximum of five students each academic year, who best demonstrate the Alumni Association’s spirit and values.

The Rich Goulet “Unsung Hero” Award
A $2,500.00 award has been made available by a generous anonymous donor to a graduating student (male or female) who can demonstrate financial need, who may not have the highest grades or be a star athlete, but who makes a consistent contribution to any teams or clubs in which he or she is involved. An “unsung hero” who may not be the first in line to win other scholarships, but is deserving of support and recognition.  All candidates will be evaluated on their grades (transcript will be accessed by the Academic Counselling Office) and on the successful completion of this application.

STMC Scholarships and Awards - No Application Required

(Award recipients selected by STMC) 

Archbishop James Carney Award
Two Catholic students are selected by the Grade 12 Religion teachers and Religion department head. Each award is for $1000.00.

Art Prize
A $200.00 prize is awarded to the best art student other than the art scholarship winner awarded by the Art Department.

Brad Hardham Scholarship
A $500.00 award is given to the graduating student who best exemplifies a love of life, is popular with the other students, and is not receiving another award. This scholarship is awarded by the school administration in consultation with Grade 12 teachers.

Bro. Carrothers Art Scholarship
This is a $500.00 award that is given to the best art student by the Art Department. This student must be going to a fine arts program at a post-secondary institution.

James Wade Bourget/Knight of the Year Award
A $1,500.00 award has been made available by family and friends, in memory of James Bourget (’93), to be given to the recipient of the Senior Knight of the Year Award. 

John Favro Drama Award
A $500.00 award is given to a graduating student who made the greatest contribution to STMC’s Drama program.

John Kozak Spirit Award
A $1,000.00 award has been made available by family and friends, in memory of John Kozak. This award is given to the graduating student who best exemplifies John’s outlook on life: lives life to the fullest, shows strength and encouragement, treats others with courtesy and respect, inspires us to all be better people, displays true school spirit and inspires others to do so as well. The award recipient is selected by the student body.

Larry Johnston Award for Citizenship
This recipient of this award, presented at the Night of Knights, is given a $750.00 scholarship from Artona.

Sally Gribble Memorial Scholarship
All grade 12 students will write an essay as part of their English 12 curriculum.  The student with the best essay will be awarded $500.00.

The Brother Charles Slattery Memorial Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is named in honour of a former principal of STMC. It will be awarded to a student who "has been a powerful positive influence on the lives of their fellow students by affirming others' value, supporting their peers in their endeavours, inspiring those who are struggling, contributing positive energy with their sense of humour, and displaying the "nothing is impossible" attitude with which Bro. Slattery approached challenges. Someone who is the "heart" or "energy" of their team or class."

The CISVA Athletics Scholarship
The Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) is pleased to offer a $250.00 scholarship to a graduating student who excels in athletics at STMC.  The winning student can be involved in extra-curricular teams or in the PE Department.  The winner will be chosen by the administration in consultation with the faculty.

The CISVA Fine Arts Scholarship
The Catholic Independent Schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) is pleased to offer a $250.00 scholarship to a graduating student who excels in Fine Arts.

The Ferdie Carrion Memorial Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded to a student who best combines the qualities of athleticism with a good sense of humour and a pleasant disposition. He or she should possess a true zest for life.

The Terry Grant McLean Memorial Scholarship
This $750.00 award named in the memory of Terry Grant McLean, an alumnus, is awarded to a grade 12 student who, in the opinion of the faculty, best combines participation in school activities with concern for his or her classmates, sportsmanship and a solid academic record.

Other Academic Scholarships
The STMC Parents Association and the STMC staff recognize the top academic students each year.  The top 5 ranked seniors receive scholarships ranging from $300.00 to $1200.00.

 

External Scholarships

There are numerous external scholarships that grade 12 students can apply to.  Students and parents are advised to do their own research. We will use this site to promote certain scholarships that our students have won in the past.  Many of the scholarships list below are offered annually. This is not an exhaustive list.  There are many more out there. Students must do their research.

1.  Loran Scholarships  Deadline:  October 14th

The Loran Awards are extremely prestigious and highly competitive.   Awards range from $100.000.00 on down.  Students can apply either as school sponsored applicants or direct pool.  Each high school is limited to nominating 3 students.   Typically STMC has between 6 to 8 applicants (3 sponsored; the remainder apply as direct pool candidates.)  The final application deadline is October 19th; however, students must begin the process well in advance.   For details concerning the application process and the award itself, go to . . .       http://www.loranscholar.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Loran-Info-Sheet-2017-EN_PRINT.pdf

2.  Horatio Alger Scholarships   Deadline: October 25th

A total of 80 Plus Scholarships Awarded in different areas.  Check out the link below.  Funded through the generosity of the Members of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada.  The Canadian Scholarships are awarded to eligible students across all provinces and territories in Canada.  These scholarships are need based.  To see the complete Eligibility Requirements go to . . .

3.  TD Scholarships for Community Leadership  Deadline November 18th

Applicants must have a minimum average of 75%  and have an extensive record of community leadership.  For a complete list of eligiblity requirements and to download the application go to . . . https://www.tdcanadatrust.com/products-services/banking/student-life/scholarship-for-community-leadership/index.jsp  20 scholarships of up to $70,000.00 each are awarded.

4.  Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards.  Deadline:  February 1st

To be considered, applicants must meet be:

  • In good academic standing.
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Students who have already completed secondary (high) school OR are graduating from secondary (high) school in the coming year OR those completing their first year of CÉGEP
  • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
  • Planning to or already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.

5.  The 2016 Re/Max Quest for Excellence program  Deadline:  March 13, 2017

Sixteen  $1,000.00 bursaries are awarded.  This award involves writing a 1250 word essay.  The 2016 Re/Max Quest for Excellence program is open for submissions from September 12, 2016 until midnight March 13, 2017. The following Four Scholarships are offered by the BC Ministry of Education

6. BC Achievement Scholarships

BC Achievement Scholarships recognize the top 8000 graduates in the province. The Ministry will determine recipients based on achievement in Grades 10, 11, and 12 courses that satisfy 2004 Graduation Program requirements, including elective courses. Grad Transitions will not be included.

A cumulative average percentage will be calculated and form the basis for determining winners, who receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition. Students do not apply for this scholarship.

7. BC Excellence Scholarships 

There are 55 BC Excellence Scholarships available to recognize well-rounded B.C. graduates. Winners will have demonstrated service and leadership, both at school and in their communities, and shown aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths. They will receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to use for post-secondary tuition.

Nomination and Application
  1. Students must be nominated by their secondary school in order to apply for this scholarship.   Only one student from each school may be nominated. We will be issuing information on how to be considered for this award before the end of 2016.  Students must confirm their nomination by having their school principal sign and date the verification section of the application form.  To access more information, go to . . . 8.  Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship  Deadline:  February 15, 2017

The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Winners receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to redeem when they are registered and attending an approved K-12 teacher education program at one of BC’s nine Faculties of Education. Simon Fraser University, Trinity Western University, Thompson Rivers University, University of the Fraser Valley, University of British Columbia, University of Northern British Columbia, University of Victoria, University of British Columbia - Okanagan; Vancouver Island University.  To access more information about these awards, go to . . .  Pathway to Teacher Education

9.  Dogwood District/Authority Scholarships

There are 5500 District/Authority Scholarships distributed across school districts and independent school authorities that recognize graduating B.C. students for excellence in their chosen area of interest or strength.  Winners will receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition.

These award acknowledge academics but also recognize a student's accomplishments in a number of fields:

  • Indigenous Languages and Culture, demonstrated at school or in the community
  • Fine Arts (e.g., Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music)
  • Applied Skills (e.g., Business Ed, Technology Ed, Home Economics)
  • Physical Activity (e.g., Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, not limited to Physical Education)
  • International Languages with Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) or External Assessments, including A.P. and I.B. courses
  • Community Service (Volunteer Activity), which includes demonstration of local and global issues and cultural awareness
  • Technical and Trades Training (e.g., Carpentry, Automotive, Mechanics, Cook Training)

Students can apply for this scholarship through their school counsellor.  As Independent school students, STMC students will be asked to give a presentation about themselves in front of a group of adjudicators at an evening event hosted by St. George's.  The deadline will be in early April 2017.  The 2017 application for this scholarship is not yet available on line.10.  South Burnaby Metro Bursary

If an STMC student has participated in the South Burnaby Metro Athletic Program, they might qualify for a bursary.    These awards are available every spring.  More info to follow. 

10.  Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame    

Students must be Burnaby residents and must have made significant accomplishments in athletics,  These awards are available every spring.  More info to follow. 

11.  BCGEU Scholarship Awards

The BC Government and Service Employees' Union is offering $45,000 in scholarship awards, $3,000 for full-time students and $2,000 for part-time students who are BCGEU members or relatives of BCGEU members or staff. 12.  BC Hydro Scholarships

13.  BC Sports Hall of Fame Jack Farley Youth Sports Achievement Awards

Awarded to one outstanding male and one outstanding female amateur athlete graduating from a BC secondary school. These students will excel in a particular sport and exemplify the values, commitment, and contribution to the community held by Jack Farley, an honoured member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.http://www.bcsportshalloffame.com/education/schola...

14.  BC Sports Scholarship Program

David Gifford Memorial Scholarships - Two scholarships of $700 each, Zone Scholarships - Two scholarships of $500 each. More information and application form available at www.bcschoolsports.ca/recognition .

15.  Burger King Scholars Program

Awarded to student who have a cummulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and who plan to enrol in a full time post secondary program for two or four years. http://www.burgerkingscholarship.com/financial-aid...

16.  Confratellanza Italo-Canadese Scholarship

Open to students of Italian origin i.e. having at least one parent or grandparent of direct Italian decent and have an academic standing sufficient to qualify for entry into the post secondary institution of their choice. Applications for the 2016 - 2017 scholarship will be available in the near future.

17.  Corpus Christi College

Step into Leadership Nominated Excellence Award – Awarded to one student per high school who exemplifies academic excellence, service to community, and commitment to leadership. Students will be awarded with full tuition for one year and commit to be an ambassador for CCC. Corpus Christi offers a number of other entrance awards. Information and applications are available at: www.corpuschristi.ca . Students must be nominated by the school, have a current GPA of at least 84%, have demonstrated leadership and community service, and must have applied to and intend to enroll at CCC.

18. Father Emmanuele Rosaia Scholarship

Two scholarships of $1500 each will be awarded in the name of Father Emmanuele Rosaia, a Franciscan Missionary Priest who gave unselfishly of his time and energy to many a person and to the Italian community in particular. Applicants must be Roman Catholic and of Italian-Canadian origin, expected to graduate with a B grade point average or higher and have plans to attend a university or community college where studies will lead to a university degree in Canada or another country. Applicants must submit a word processed letter of no more than 400 words, double spaced, with full contact information, explaining why they deserve to be the recipients of the scholarship. Applicants must also submit no less than three letters of reference, one of which must be written by the applicant's parish priest and one of which must be written by a current teacher of the applicant, supporting the scholarship application explaining why he is an appropriate candidate for the scholarship. 2016-2017 requirements and deadlines will be posted when they are received. All correspondence should be forwarded to: The Father Rosaia Scholarship Committee, c/o 12059 188A Street, Pitt Meadows, BC, V3Y 1W3. The selection committee will put particular focus on the following: strong academic achievement, the strength of Christian character of the candidate, especially leadership and citizenship qualities, as well as community services rendered within the candidate's own community and school. Applicants, who in their studies, have a leaning towards the humanities: languages, literature, philosophy, history, psychology, fine arts, etc. This does not, however, exclude applicants whose academic focus is in the sciences.

19. APEG Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC Scholarships

APEG Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC has a $2500 scholarship intended for students heading into engineering or geoscience programs at UBC, UNBC, BCIT, UVIC or SFU. The deadline is June 2017.  Go to apeg.bc.ca/scholarships for an application and more info.
