STUDENT LIFE

House Competition

Limerick starts 2024 in the lead of the House competition! London, Oxford, and Waterford are close behind, nipping at their heels!

Intramurals

Intramurals will begin in 2024 on two fronts: intramural dodgeball and an intramural chess tournament. Lookout for posters and sign up information this coming week.

JEANS DAY

This Friday is Jeans Day! Bring $2 to contribute the STMC Missions program and wear your favorite jeans.

About the Missions Program
The STMC Missions program is a collection of monies generated by the student body to help those in need. Our donations have supported both local and international causes over the past decades and continue to proudly do so in true Edmund Rice spirit. Recently we have generously given to our Christian Brother community in Dominica in the West Indies, our Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in Peru, Our Lady of Guadeloupe middle school in Brownsville Texas, and grassroots programs for single indigenous Mothers in Vanderhoof. Lastly, we donate funds and food to various local breakfast and lunch programs.

CAREER LIFE

Our next Career Life session is on Wednesday, January 17.

• Grade 8 students will hear Constable Di Trolio, a Transit Police Officer, present on pedestrian safety, transit safety and situational awareness.

• Grade 9 students are setting up a personal E-portfolio

• Grade 10 students will take a Myers Briggs personality test to further their career exploration

• Grade 11 students should be well on their way towards completing their Capstone Projects

• Grade 12 students will review the expectations of their final exit interview presentation, review dates and details for scholarships and applications with Mr. Bouwman and Mrs. DeWith. Mr. Kyle O’Genski will then present about the importance of one’s LinkedIn profile as part of career preparation.

LEARNING COMMONS

Stuff Matters
Mr. Bough’s Engineering 11/12 class is partnering with the Learning Commons in a novel study of Mark Miodownik’s “Stuff Matters” and his work in Material Engineering. Students will focus on the skill of ‘sketchnoting’ while reading the novel.

Cultural History
Mayor Hurley visited with Admin to present STMC with copies of the newly released book “Rooted: Chinese Canadian Stories in Burnaby”. This Burnaby project highlights the contributions of Chinese Canadians and their impact in shaping Burnaby.

Two STMC Alumni families, the Liu and Yan families, are featured in this fascinating and historic book. If you would like to sign out one of these copies, please stop by the Learning Commons!
