UBC MD Candidate 2026

Bianca Te '17

Bianca Te was the league MVP at one point and led her team to the top of the league in 2015. The 5-foot-7 libero also helped her club team, the Coquitlam Ducks, to a second-place finish at the U17 BC Provincial Championships, and has been a provincial tournament all-star three years in a row.

She is currently a UBC MD Candidate for 2026.

Warren Dean Flandez '98

Warren Dean Flandez is a Canadian gospel and rhythm and blues singer. He is a two-time Juno Award nominee for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year, receiving nods at the Juno Awards of 2017 for Eternally Grateful and at the Juno Awards of 2019 for Speak. Warren is also an eight-time GMA Covenant award winner.

Peter is from Burnaby, B.C. and has been with Special Olympics for 10 years. He enjoys his involvement as it has provided him with opportunities to coach and surround himself with hard working, enthusiastic and passionate athletes and volunteers. Peter’s goals for his first World Games are to help the athletes have a safe and unforgettable experience at the greatest sporting event in the world.

Kimberly Newell '12

Kimberly Jessica Newell (born October 4, 1995) is a Canadian ice hockey player and member of the Chinese national ice hockey team. She most recently played in the 2021–22 season of the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) with the KRS Vanke Rays.

Newell represented China in the women’s ice hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Kyle Turris '07

Kyle Turris (born August 14, 1989) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He was selected third overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He has also played with the Ottawa Senators, Oulun Kärpät, Nashville Predators, and Edmonton Oilers.

Angelica Parente '19

Angelica Parente, a 2019 graduate of St. Thomas More Collegiate, has consistently demonstrated resilience and determination throughout her life. Living with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) since childhood, she has navigated health challenges while excelling academically in criminology at Simon Fraser University, where she made the Dean’s and President’s Honour Roll multiple times. Alongside her studies, Parente has accumulated significant co-op and volunteer experiences, working with the RCMP and vulnerable populations. Inspired by her grandmother’s perseverance, she aims to pursue a career in public service, driven by a strong sense of social justice.

 

CFL Hall of Famer & University of Calgary Chancellor

Jon Cornish '02

Jon Cornish is a former Canadian football running back, best known for his stellar career with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Cornish joined STMC in grade 8 and went on to become one of the CFL’s most dominant players, winning the Most Outstanding Player award in 2013 and leading the league in rushing yards multiple times. Cornish retired in 2015, and his contributions to Canadian football earned him a place in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2019.

In 2022, Jon was elected the 15th chancellor of the University of Calgary.

University of St. Michael's College President

David Sylvester '79

Dr. David Sylvester, a Canadian university and college president for 25 years, has led the University of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto since 2018. Previously, he served as Principal of King’s University College at Western, founding President of Corpus Christi College at UBC, and the first lay principal of St. Mark’s Theological College in Vancouver. A professor of medieval social and economic history, he holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fordham University and has taught in Canada and the U.S.

Currently, he serves on the International Committee of Universities Canada, the boards of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies and the Toronto School of Theology, and has held leadership roles in Catholic higher education and humanities organizations.
