STMC physics teacher Joe Muise wrote an article that is now published on the CERN Courier. In the article he speaks about finding unique ways to inspire students by incorporating modern physics into lessons, drawing on experiences from visits to major labs like CERN, SNOLAB, and TRIUMF. He introduced short, engaging units on modern physics, allowing students to explore advanced topics without the pressure of deep, exam-focused learning. His involvement in workshops at leading research facilities has given him the confidence to share real-world physics research, inspiring his students to engage more deeply with the subject.
Inspired by CERN’s Microcosm garden, Mr. Muise transformed his classroom into a museum-like space featuring decommissioned equipment from major labs. This display, with contributions from TRIUMF and SNOLAB, sparks conversations about the science behind the pieces and has significantly boosted student interest in physics. As a result, many of his students have pursued physics majors and secured internships at CERN and TRIUMF, showing the lasting impact of his creative approach.
