The mathematics department participates in several contests throughout the year. Students in grade 12 courses are invited to participate in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge in November sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society. This contest is the qualifier for the Canadian Mathematics Olympiad. Students in grade 12 courses can also write the Euclid Contest in April sponsored by the University of Waterloo.
Grade 9, 10, and 11 students are invited to write the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat contests, respectively. These contests are sponsored by the University of Waterloo and are written in February. Every year, many of our students earn the distinction of being in the top 25% of all contest participants.
Grade 8 students write two contests that are both sponsored by the University of Waterloo. In November, grade 8 students participate in the Beaver Computing Challenge which is an introduction to the connections between mathematics and computer science. In April, grade 8 students write the Gauss mathematics contest.
