St. Thomas More Collegiate is pleased to offer an Intramural or Recreational Sports program designed to give all students the opportunity to play sports for fun, regardless of their ability. Our hope is that this program fosters in students a desire for lifelong participation in one or more of the activities. The Recreational Sports program has a greater emphasis on competition, skill-building and winning than the physical education classes in which every student participates. However Recreational Sports are designed to provide more equal playing time for all participants. At present, recreational sports take place during lunchtime.
The Tennis Team is both a competitive and recreational activity. Each spring, usually starting after Spring Break, the team practices after school, 2-3 times per week, depending on the weather. Because fielding a competitive team depends on the number of players (10 minimum, 5 male, 5 female), their commitment and their overall ability, each year starts off as a club and only in certain years will it be elevated to a competitive team. Otherwise, the students come to lessons and participate in match play for their enjoyment and as an introduction to the game of tennis – a sport for a lifetime.
We are currently in the process of building a 7’s Rugby program at STMC. This year there will be a “Rugby club” that begins a few weeks before Spring Break. This plan will allow both boys and girls of all grades who are interested in learning the game of Rugby, an opportunity to get familiar with the game in a safe “non-contact” format. After Spring Break the goal is to select a competitive team that will compete in some friendly tournaments with practices occurring twice per week.
