CanSat Competition Fund

The CanSat Competition Fund has been created at St. Thomas More Collegiate as a special project fund to support our select grade 12 Knights, who are representing Canada at the European Space Agency’s (ESA) CanSat competition in June 2019.  Our team of four grade 12 students (Yousef M., Ethan R., Ryan R., Philip S.) and Science teacher, Mr. Joe Muise, will be the first Canadian representatives to this exciting event!

Our Knights will be competing against teams from 19 other countries across Europe. Canadian students are eligible for this competition due to Canada’s status as an associate member of the ESA.  This year’s competition will take place near Bologna, Italy in late June.

For this competition, our team is tasked with building a probe that will be launched by a rocket and released from an altitude of one kilometer.  During descent, the probe will collect data on pressure and temperature as its prescribed primary mission.  All teams have to choose a secondary mission, and our team has decided to collect images to build a topographical map of the area.  The team must be able to receive data during the descent and use it (along with data from the recovered CanSat) to demonstrate the scientific significance of their project.

Our fundraising goal is $11,000. Funds raised will be used to support the travel, equipment and parts (for building the CanSat) costs for the team to participate in this highly transformational and unique learning experience for our young Knights.
