CanSat Competition Fund

The CanSat Competition Fund has been created at St. Thomas More Collegiate as a special project fund to support our select team of Knights, who are representing Canada at the European Space Agency’s (ESA) CanSat competition in June 2020.  This year’s team of two grade 11 students (Samuel C. & Hongzip K.), four grade 10 students (Angelina C., Dante R., Cynthia W. & Eric Z.) and Science teacher, Mr. Joe Muise, will be travelling to Europe for this exciting STEM project.  The team will be supported by three grade 12s:  Victor C., Isaac V.R. & Mike W.

In the CanSat competition teams are tasked with building a probe that will fit inside a soda can (hence the name CanSat).

The probes will be launched to an altitude of 1 km and during descent, must record data on temperature, pressure and location as it’s prescribed primary mission.   All teams must choose a secondary mission, and our team has chosen to mount an infrared camera to look for heat signatures.   Their intent is to develop applications to search and rescue and forest fire fighting.

The location of the 2020 competition will be announced in February, 2020.

In 2019, a group of our students became the first Canadian team to take part in the competition.   They travelled to Bologna, Italy and competed against teams from 18 other countries.  They team took home one of the top prizes in the formal report part of the competition.   More details about the 2019 team can be found here.

Our fundraising goal is $15,000. Funds raised will be used to support the travel, equipment and parts (for building the CanSat) costs for the team to participate in this highly transformational and unique learning experience for our young Knights.

We are grateful of the support of the Canadian aerospace and technology companies that have chosen to support our team.
