School Crest

The original school crest was created by a student by the name of Louis Villegas in 1976. Prior to this year, there had been no school logo or crest. STMC had no visual or graphic presence.

It wasn’t until Louis took on the task of designing the yearbook of ’76 that the crest began to take shape. Earlier in the year, Bro. Bassett had gone to a heraldry store at Lougheed Mall where they produced the crest of the More family of St. Thomas More.

Using this crest as a foundation, Louis added a Knight’s helmet, the cascading vegetation, as well as the ribbons on the bottom with the words “Saint Thomas More High School”. The design was finally complete and it would make its first appearance on the cover of the 1976 yearbook. From this point on, this design began to stick, appearing in yearbooks on a more consistent basis.

By 1986, the words in the ribbon had been changed from “Saint Thomas More High School” to “St. Thomas More Collegiate” and finally to “Scientia per Fidem”, Latin for Knowledge through Faith.

Louis’ design remained as the school crest until 2024.

After 46 years, the STMC crest and logo had undergone a small but important rebranding effort. The updated crest features a more modern and simpler design, while maintaining the essence of the original coat of arms of St. Thomas More. Considerable brainstorming, drafting, and deliberation took place to determine on a look that will last for many years.

After several iterations and mock drafts, STMC landed on a design that reflects STMC’s commitment towards forward-thinking ideology and innovation.
