Preferential Option for the Poor Week

As we begin celebrating our third Catholic Social Teaching, the Preferential Option for the Poor, our community will take part in special activities connected to this teaching throughout January and February. This focus connects beautifully with the beginning of Lent on February 18, particularly through the Lenten practice of almsgiving.

Earlier this month, Brother Hugh O’Neil shared with our staff his experiences with the Brothers and how he has witnessed this mission lived out firsthand during his time as Provincial Head. His reflections helped ground this teaching in real-world witness and service.

On Friday, January 30, our school Mass will be dedicated to the Preferential Option for the Poor, and our community will continue a special focus on this teaching throughout early February, inviting us to grow in compassion, generosity, and solidarity with those most in need.

Ultimate – Starting Soon!

Planning is well underway for the 2026 Ultimate season. Any students in grades 8 – 12 interested in playing should join the Ultimate Google Classroom (code: cubiqqr) and attend the upcoming information meetings (at lunch in room 214).

Senior: Tuesday, February 3
Junior: Wednesday, February 4
Grade 8: Thursday, February 5

As ultimate is a co-ed sport, both boys and girls are needed for all teams. Tryouts will begin the week after the meetings.

Mathematics Contests

Attention math enthusiasts!

Get ready to challenge yourself, build your problem-solving skills, and represent our school in exciting math competitions offered by the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC). Waterloo strongly encourages participation in these contests for students who are considering applying to one of their STEM faculties.

There are a variety of upcoming contests available for students in Math 8-12 courses (scroll down to Save the Date section for more contests). Students should choose the contest that corresponds to the math course they are currently enrolled in, not necessarily their grade level for students who have accelerated.

Pascal Contest (Math 9), Cayley Contest (Foundations & Pre-Calculus 10), and Fermat Contest (Pre-Calculus 11).

These contests will be held on Wednesday, February 25, in Room 115, starting at 2:50 pm.

After School Academic Support

Want to excel in academics? Need extra help with school assignments? Doing well in your courses and wanting to help others succeed? If ‘Yes” to any of these then, After School Academic Support is the right place for you.

The After School Academic Support offers a wide range of support to students who need help in completing their homework assignments and preparing for any upcoming assessments. Our academically excelling Tutors support their peers and help them to be confident and do well in their academics. Also, Peer Tutors get their Service Hours for the hours that they have tutored. The program runs throughout the year on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:45 – 3:45 pm at the Learning Commons. You are free to attend any/all of the days depending on your own schedule.

If you are interested in Peer Tutoring or getting some academic support, then show up at 2:45 – 3:45 pm in the Learning Commons (sign-up can also be done any time of the year during session).

Coffee Mug Drive

As part of Preferential Option for the Poor Week, our Blessed Edmund Rice Team (BERT) will be collecting coffee mugs to donate to Catholic Men’s Charity during the week of February 2–6.

On February 5, our student leaders will visit the shelter—run by the Archdiocese—for a tour and to personally deliver these donated items. Each night, over 100 men access this shelter, and coffee mugs are an ongoing and much-needed item in supporting their daily hospitality and care.

This initiative invites our community to live out the Preferential Option for the Poor in a simple but meaningful way—offering warmth, dignity, and welcome to those in need.

Euclid Math Contest

Written annually by over 25 000 participants worldwide, the Euclid Contest gives senior-level secondary school students the opportunity to solve innovative problems using their creativity and all of the knowledge they have gained in secondary school mathematics.

The Contest’s mix of short-answer and full-solution questions provides participants with an opportunity to effectively communicate their thinking. Additionally, the final questions in the Euclid are some of the most complex and challenging among all our contests, helping participants build perseverance, a key component of mathematical problem-solving.

The Euclid Contest (Pre-Calculus 12 and/or Calculus 12) will take place on Tuesday, March 31, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am in the library.
